We As Language Learners

Jennifer Orejuela

I am a language student who since childhood has been very interested in teaching, I really enjoy the beautiful opportunity to learn another language (English) so that in the future (which I now see a little less distant) I can transmit everything I have learned to the new generations, so that they learn not only to communicate in a second language, but also learn the importance of knowing the world in which we are, so that in this way they know that it is valuable what another culture can share with us and vice versa.

I am constantly learning, therefore I recognize that I must improve in many aspects, but at the same time I look back and realize that I have improved in many things; I must continue to strive to achieve the goals I set when I started this career and improve day by day my skills, knowledge and other factors to be taken into account to become a teacher.

I am a language student who loves diversity and new learning, I believe that in order to learn a new language I must practice as much as I can, talking to people who know the language I want to learn (the targetlanguage), reading, not only news or academic texts, but also everything what happens on a day-to-day and texts that catch my attention, listening to music and news or documentaries help me develop my listening and reception skills. I am aware that multilingualism can also take parts of the culture and identity to our minds and life, and I am glad to know that this is a tool to show mine to others.

Since I was a little girl, I have been passionate about English because I grew up listening to my father's music: Rock in English, and although I only enjoyed the melody of the songs, little by little I became interested in understanding their messages and being able to sing them correctly. I used to put on YouTube the song with the lyrics and the translation and I would repeat it until I learned it.

As time went by, I grew up and my desire to learn by myself increased, so I came home from school to look for tutorials, exercises or explanations of the subject I had seen in class, when I was in high school I saw the 5 levels of English of SENA and I started to surround myself as much as possible with the language: listening to songs in English, I configured my cell phone and computer in English, and I started to watch movies in their original language, to listen to podcasts, to read books and sometimes to talk with myself in English. I must admit that it has not been easy and it has been complicated more than once, but the perseverance and desire to learn makes you improve.
