Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus, is a literary work by the English writer Mary Shelley. It was published on January 1, 1818 and framed in the tradition of the Gothic novel, the book covers themes such as scientific morality, the creation and destruction of life and the daring of humanity in its relationship with God.

Mary Shelley was born August 30, 1797, in Victorian London. She was a novelist, essayist, playwright and biographer who achieved worldwide recognition for one of the most famous works of Western literature: Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus (1818). However, she was not only the creator of that story that marked an era in gothic and horror fiction, but also set a great precedent in the role of the independent and feminist woman writer.

What led Mary Shelley to write Frankenstein?

In 1816, Mary, Percy Shelley and Lord Byron made a bet to see who would write the best horror story. Mary, as she herself recounts in the prologue to the 1831 edition of "Frankenstein", imagined Frankenstein inspired by a nightmare she had at the age of eighteen.

The first science fiction novel

Frankenstein was considered the first science fiction novel. Although it is now considered a classic, however many of the early reviews of Frankenstein were not positive.

By anonymous author

The book was published in 1818, the author's name remained anonymous because it was believed that the work would not be well received for having been written by a woman, it was until 1823 that an edition with the name Mary Shelley came to light.
